.Corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting, is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue (the graft). When the entire cornea is replaced it is known as penetrating keratoplasty and when only part of the cornea is replaced it is known as lamellar keratoplasty. Keratoplasty simply means surgery to the cornea. The graft is taken from a recently deceased individual with no known diseases or other factors that may affect the chance of survival of the donated tissue or the health of the recipientwhole eye transplantation, commonly referred to as an eye ball transplant, is not a routine or established medical procedure. The human eye is an extraordinarily complex organ with intricate neural connections to the brain, making the idea of transplanting an entire eye a formidable challenge.
The concept of eye ball transplant raises significant technical, ethical, and immunological issues. Unlike procedures such as corneal transplants, which involve replacing only a part of the eye, the transplantation of an entire eye would require precise reconnection of the optic nerve and other critical structures to ensure proper visual function. Additionally, the immune system poses a considerable barrier, as the body could potentially reject the transplanted eye.
